India direct tax collections rise 23% to ₹8.11 lakh crore

India’s net direct tax collections rose 23.09% year-on-year to ₹8.11 lakh crore for the current financial year as of August 10, 2026. This growth significantly outpaces the arithmetic required to meet the government's fiscal targets, providing the Finance Ministry with greater flexibility for fiscal consolidation and public expenditure.

Gross direct tax collections increased by 19.75% to ₹9.55 lakh crore. The surge was driven by strong performance across several categories:

• Net non-corporate tax collections, which include individuals and firms, rose 23.43% to ₹5.07 lakh crore. • Net corporate tax collections grew by 19.83% to reach ₹2.70 lakh crore. • Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collections saw a substantial increase, reaching approximately ₹33,824 crore.

Despite refunds totaling roughly ₹1.43 lakh crore during this period, the robust revenue buoyancy suggests an expanding formal economy and improved tax compliance. These higher receipts may support government priorities in infrastructure, defense, and social welfare while helping to manage the fiscal deficit.
