India directs ministries to form Quick Response Teams against misinformation

The Indian central government has directed all ministries and government departments to establish Quick Response Teams (QRTs) to combat the spread of online misinformation. These teams are tasked with monitoring social media platforms in real-time to identify misleading claims and issue official rebuttals within a two-hour window of the content emerging.

The strategy utilizes a decentralized approach, where each ministry is responsible for monitoring and responding to misinformation within its specific domain, such as health, finance, or agriculture. This is intended to ensure that responses are accurate, contextual, and timely. To better compete with viral content, the government is encouraging the use of diverse formats, including short-form videos, graphics, and memes, rather than relying solely on traditional written press releases.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is reportedly assisting departments in establishing and training these units through expert-led workshops. While some ministries have already implemented these teams, others are currently in the process of a staggered rollout.
