India shifts energy sourcing to US amid West Asia tensions

India is significantly shifting its energy sourcing patterns due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. To mitigate supply chain disruptions, the country has increased its LNG import sources from six to 15 countries and expanded its crude oil sourcing network from 27 to 41 nations.

LPG imports from the United States have risen sharply, accounting for over 73% of India's total LPG imports during July and August. This shift follows a decline in supplies from traditional Gulf partners like the UAE and Qatar. Consequently, India's LNG import costs rose 24% to $5.6 billion during the April-July period of the current financial year, driven by higher gas prices and increased shipping costs.

Due to these supply uncertainties, the Union Petroleum Ministry has temporarily suspended the issuance of new domestic LPG connections nationwide. The government is prioritizing the supply of refills to existing customers to prevent shortages. While commercial LPG cylinder prices saw a reduction of ₹206 on August 1, domestic cylinder rates remain stable in several regions, including Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
