India: Doctors treat rare case of tooth growing in eye socket
Medical professionals in India have reported a rare and unprecedented case involving a 16-year-old boy who developed teeth in his eye socket. The teenager initially sought medical attention for a painless swelling above his left eye, which eventually resulted in hard, white protrusions appearing between his eyelid and eyebrow.
Computed tomography (CT) scans confirmed the presence of a fully formed tooth in the superior orbit, the upper section of the eye socket. This condition is known medically as an ‘ectopic tooth’, which refers to teeth that develop outside their normal position in the mouth. While ectopic teeth have been documented in the nasal cavity or the roof of the mouth, experts state this is the first recorded instance of such a development within the eye socket.
Case study co-author Dr. Meghana Tanwar noted that the occurrence is a “first not just for us but the world over.” Doctors indicated that the boy had no history of facial trauma or genetic disorders that typically cause such anomalies. The tooth was successfully removed through surgery, resolving the swelling and preventing further complications. The findings were published in the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
