Uttarakhand teacher Srishti Kandari's suicide sparks dowry death probe
Srishti Kandari, a 30‑year‑old government school teacher in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, was found dead by hanging at her in‑laws' home eight months after her marriage. Before her death she posted a video alleging mental and physical harassment by her husband Saurabh Khatri and his family over dowry demands, describing herself as being called “manhoos”.
The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women, chaired by Kusum Kandwal, took suo motu cognisance of the case, speaking with the victim’s mother, the Circle Officer, the SHO and the Senior Superintendent of Police. The commission urged women to seek help and promised strict legal action. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered a CB‑CID investigation. Police have arrested the husband Saurabh Khatri and his sister‑in‑law Surabhi Khatri (Charu) under Section 80(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for dowry‑related death.
