India e-way bill generation hits 13.98 crore in July
India’s e-way bill generation reached 13.98 crore in July, signaling strong economic momentum and robust movement of goods across the country. According to GST Network data, this surge serves as a proxy for economic activity despite geopolitical challenges.
Tax experts suggest that the increase in e-way bills reflects strong supply chain movement and an expanding taxable base, driven by tighter compliance enforcement and GST rate rationalization. While e-way bills do not directly equate to Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections, the July figures are expected to influence August collection reports.
A report from the State Bank of India indicates that while overall GST revenue growth moderated in FY26, the first four months of FY27 have shown growth exceeding 10%. The bank projects annual GST collection growth to rebound within the 8–9% range.
Under the Central Goods and Services Tax Rules, 2017, an e-way bill is a mandatory electronic document for transporting goods with a consignment value exceeding ₹50,000. The system is designed to improve logistics transparency, reduce transit times, and prevent tax evasion through real-time tracking.
