India economic growth shows resilience amid core sector expansion

India's core industrial sectors recorded a 7.9% growth rate in September, marking the fastest pace in the current data series. This expansion was driven primarily by significant increases in iron ore (18.4%), electricity (11.4%), coal (10.7%), and cement (9.8%). While most sectors showed improvement, output for fertilizers, natural gas, and crude oil declined during the same period.

Former RBI Governor D. Subbarao noted that while India's recent 7.8% first-quarter growth demonstrates economic resilience, the nation faces the challenge of making this growth more productive and employment-intensive. He emphasized that sustaining growth above 7% will require increased private investment, labor-intensive manufacturing, improved human capital, and deeper integration into global value chains.

International organizations, including the World Bank and the OECD, have recently raised their GDP growth forecasts for India, supported by robust domestic demand and strong exports despite global economic headwinds.
