India Election Commission holds international conference on media's role in elections

A two‑day international conference organized by the Election Commission of India began on 3 June at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management in New Delhi. More than 480 participants – including district election officers, registration officers, scholars, researchers and members of election‑literacy clubs – are discussing best practices and innovations for media use in electoral processes.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said the commission provides regular training to booth‑level officers and agents to reach over 100 crore voters, noting record voter turnout in recent state assembly elections as evidence of growing public trust. Sessions focus on challenges such as misinformation, synthetic media, AI‑generated deepfakes, opaque digital political advertising and the regulation of online platforms. The conference aims to produce a practical, knowledge‑based global resource that will feed into the final thematic report under the “Delhi Declaration” adopted at the January 2026 India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management.

The event is hosted under the 2026 presidency of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA).
