India Election Commission’s Voter List Revision Declared Constitutional
India’s Supreme Court has ruled that the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists complies with the Constitution and does not breach the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The court affirmed the commission’s right to conduct periodic, thorough revisions and clarified that while the commission may remove ineligible names, it cannot adjudicate a citizen’s nationality. The judgment also confirmed the acceptance of Aadhaar cards as valid documentary proof during the revision process.
Following the ruling, the Election Commission held a national council meeting in New Delhi, where Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar highlighted the importance of an accurate voter list for free and fair elections. The gathering, attended by senior election officials and legal counsels, reviewed recent state assembly polls in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, and discussed legal strategies, coordination among courts, and technological tools such as ECI‑Net and electronic voting machines.
Both events underscore the commission’s reinforced legal standing and its ongoing efforts to safeguard electoral integrity across India.
