India electronics sector supports 2.5 million jobs, Minister Vaishnaw reports
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that India’s electronics manufacturing sector now supports approximately 2.5 million jobs. Of these, 1.2 million positions are specifically within the mobile phone manufacturing industry.
Defending the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, Vaishnaw highlighted its financial impact. He noted that while the government has paid out Rs 19,000 crore in incentives, direct tax collections have reached Rs 25,000 crore, with Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections totaling Rs 3,00,000 crore.
The minister’s remarks follow the Union Cabinet's approval of the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS), which has a budgetary outlay of Rs 62,500 crore for the period from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31. The scheme aims to increase domestic value addition and strengthen local supply chains through incentives ranging from 2.25% to 5% for eligible sales, plus additional incentives for domestic component sourcing.
