India emerges as third-largest arms exporter to Europe
India has become the third-largest exporter of defense equipment to Europe, following the United States and Israel. During the last fiscal year, India's defense exports reached a record high of 38,424 crore rupees (approximately 3.6 billion euros).
This surge is largely driven by the ‘rearm Europe’ movement initiated by European Union and NATO members following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. As European nations seek to replenish depleted military stocks, there has been an acute shortage of standard artillery shells, mortars, and explosives. Indian manufacturers have addressed this supply gap by providing NATO-standard 155mm artillery shells and other munitions.
Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh noted that India's ability to deliver high-quality products at competitive costs and within strict timelines has secured its position in the market. This shift is supported by the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which has expanded domestic production capacity through both 16 major Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and approximately 840 large and medium-sized private companies. India's defense products are now reaching over 80 countries, including growing demand across Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
