International Labour Organization reports rise in global youth unemployment
The International Labour Organization (ILO) reports a global rise in youth unemployment, which reached 12.4% in 2025, affecting 67 million people aged 15 to 24. This trend reverses post-pandemic improvements and is driven by sluggish economic growth, geopolitical tensions, and rapid technological shifts.
Additionally, the number of young people not in employment, education, or training (NEET) has risen to 20%, totaling over 257 million individuals. The ILO warns that artificial intelligence poses a significant risk, as approximately 6.1% of jobs held by those aged 15 to 29 are vulnerable to automation, particularly in middle-skilled roles like administration and sales.
Regional disparities are stark. The Arab States and North Africa face the highest rates at 26.2% and 22.6%, respectively. In high-income regions, North American youth unemployment rose from 8.3% in 2023 to 9.8% in 2025, while rates in Northern, Southern, and Western Europe remained high at 15%.
