India enforces strict SIM card limits to bolster digital security

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a strict enforcement drive to regulate mobile connections and enhance national security. Following a circular issued on August 17, telecom service providers are now required to implement technical and organizational measures to prevent individuals from exceeding the legal limit of mobile SIM cards.

As of August 24, operators are prohibited from issuing new SIM cards to subscribers who have already reached the prescribed quota. While the limit of nine connections per person is an existing regulation, the new mandate focuses on rigorous implementation to curb digital fraud and ensure accountability within the country’s digital infrastructure. Specific limits may apply to sensitive regions such as Jammu and Kashmir and Assam.
