India engages US to address new student visa restrictions

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has revised rules for non‑immigrant visas in the F (students), J (exchange visitors) and I (media) categories, notably cutting the post‑study grace period for F‑1 student visas from 60 days to 30 days. The changes replace the previous indefinite stay framework and impose stricter timelines for leaving the United States, transferring schools, or changing status.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it is actively communicating with American authorities to mitigate any difficulties Indian nationals may face under the new regime. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that visa policies are sovereign matters but assured that New Delhi will raise concerns on behalf of genuine travelers and students to minimise inconvenience.
