India EPFO to increase EPF wage ceiling to ₹25,000

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is increasing the wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, effective September 17, 2026. This marks the ninth adjustment to the limit since the scheme's inception in 1952, when the ceiling was just ₹300.

The change will impact employee deductions and retirement savings. For those whose contributions are restricted to the statutory ceiling, a 12% contribution could rise from ₹1,800 to ₹3,000 per month. This increase may lead to higher long-term retirement accumulation but could also result in lower monthly take-home pay.

Employees are advised to evaluate how these changes affect their Cost to Company (CTC) structures, tax implications, and overall cash flow. Under the new tax regime, interest on employee contributions exceeding ₹2.5 lakh in a financial year may become taxable.
