India expands AI initiatives for multilingual governance
The Government of India is expanding its use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to preserve linguistic heritage and improve public service delivery. Through the Digital India BHASHINI Division and NITI Aayog, the government is developing multilingual, voice-first AI solutions to ensure inclusive governance and accessible digital services in various Indian languages.
Key initiatives include the BHASHINI platform, which hosts over 360 AI-based language models and provides services such as machine translation and speech recognition. Additionally, the BharatGen project, anchored at IIT Bombay, is developing a multimodal Large Language Model designed to support all 22 scheduled Indian languages. Other tools like SMRITI are being utilized to automate meeting transcriptions and translations to enhance operational efficiency in government workflows.
