India expands AI integration in higher education and teacher training

Artificial intelligence is expanding its footprint across the Indian educational landscape through both corporate partnerships and state-led training initiatives.

OpenAI has established partnerships with six prestigious Indian higher education institutions, including the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi. The initiative aims to integrate AI tools directly into academic workflows such as research, coding, and data analysis, targeting over 100,000 students and faculty members within a year. This move follows reports that India is the second-largest market for ChatGPT, with over 100 million monthly active users.

Simultaneously, in Telangana, Dr B R Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) has launched a 15-day ‘AI for Teachers’ programme in collaboration with the state's Department of School Education. The program, which has already seen over 1,500 teacher registrations, focuses on the practical and ethical application of generative AI in lesson planning, content creation, and student assessment to ensure educators can effectively work alongside new technologies.
