India expands BESS capacity through new CTUIL advisory and major tenders

The Central Transmission Utility of India Limited (CTUIL) has issued an advisory regarding the enhancement of energy storage capacity (MWh) for battery energy storage system (BESS) projects that have already been granted connectivity. This enhancement allows for increased MWh without increasing the approved charging or discharging capacity (MW). Applicants must submit a request under the General Network Access Regulations, noting the additional MWh capacity while keeping the MW capacity unchanged.

In related developments, Coal India Limited (CIL) and Cochin Shipyard Limited have launched tenders for BESS capacity in India. CIL, through its subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, is seeking an EPC partner to develop 80 MW/320 MWh of standalone BESS capacity across four sites in Odisha. This project, which includes 15 years of operations and maintenance, is part of CIL’s goal to develop 5 GW of renewable energy capacity by FY 2028-29. Additionally, Cochin Shipyard Limited has issued a call for a 10 MW/20 MWh grid-connected BESS project.
