India expands cargo transshipment networks amid West Asia crisis

The Indian government is expanding its cargo transshipment frameworks to mitigate trade disruptions caused by the ongoing crisis in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. To ensure uninterrupted international trade, authorities are facilitating the transshipment of liquid, break, and dry bulk cargo through Indian seaports and airports under strict customs supervision.

In the aviation sector, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu has announced the expansion of the transshipment air cargo network. Following a successful pilot program on the Chennai-Delhi-Frankfurt route, the network now includes additional domestic stations in Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, alongside new international destinations in London and Copenhagen.

As part of these efforts to improve the ease of doing business, the mandatory re-screening of transshipment cargo at transit stations has been removed for these specific routes. The government plans to further expand this framework to include international-to-international and international-to-domestic transshipments.
