India expands defence production and exports to bolster self-reliance
India is experiencing a significant rise in defence production and exports as part of a strategic push toward self-reliance. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth noted that the country has seen substantial growth in these sectors over the last decade, aligning with the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) vision.
The defence industry is undergoing a revamp through increased privatisation and a focus on manufacturing to drive economic growth and job creation. Reports indicate that defence production reached a record 1.78 lakh crore in the 2025-2026 period. While the sector is expanding through domestic security needs and international exports, discussions continue regarding the balance between industrial growth and avoiding a war-driven economy.
