India expands digital public services and multilingual AI governance
The Indian government is expanding its digital public service infrastructure through the Digital India programme, utilizing platforms such as UMANG and DigiLocker. As of July 31, UMANG offers approximately 2,575 services with over 11.66 crore registered users, while DigiLocker provides 5,437 document types and services to more than 72.43 crore registered users.
To further enhance inclusivity, the Digital India BHASHINI Division and NITI Aayog have entered a partnership to develop multilingual, voice-first AI solutions. This initiative, known as BHASHINI for Seva/Sanchalan, aims to integrate language translation APIs and AI-powered technologies into government platforms. This will allow citizens to access information and services in their preferred Indian languages.
Additional efforts include the expansion of Common Service Centres (CSCs) to improve digital access in rural areas, with over 407,000 functional centres at the Gram Panchayat level. The government is also utilizing tools like SMRITI for automated multilingual meeting transcription and NITI TARA to support data-driven decision-making at the grassroots level.
