India expands food safety inspections and PDS reforms to secure dairy and grain supplies
On May 27, the Food Safety and Drug Administration in Uttar Pradesh launched a special campaign in Greater Noida to check the quality of dairy products. Inspectors raided two establishments—Dairy Fun and BSR Food & Beverage—collecting ice‑cream and frozen dessert samples for laboratory testing and ensuring that no unapproved halal‑certified items were being sold.
The central government also approved a five‑year extension of the "Sarthak‑PDS" programme, allocating ₹25,530 crore to strengthen the Public Distribution System. The plan aims to modernise logistics, increase transparency, and introduce AI, machine‑learning, NLP and blockchain tools for real‑time monitoring and grievance redressal, covering roughly 813.5 million beneficiaries.
Both measures are intended to improve food safety and distribution for Indian consumers.
