India and UAE expand economic ties and maritime cooperation

India and the United Arab Emirates are significantly expanding their economic partnership through the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). During the 14th High Level Joint Task Force on Investments in Mumbai, officials agreed to implement initiatives for settling trade in local currencies, integrating payment and messaging systems, and exploring central-bank digital currencies. The two nations aim to increase bilateral trade to USD 200 billion by 2032. The UAE has expressed intent to invest an additional USD 25 billion in India, with a long-term goal of reaching USD 100 billion in total investment. Key areas for cooperation include energy, infrastructure, technology, artificial intelligence, and a maritime sector focusing on ship ownership, manufacturing, and port development.

Separately, India has secured tariff relief from the United States on specific specialty pharmaceutical products. While the US prepares to impose a 100 per cent tariff on certain patented pharmaceutical imports starting September 29, 2026, India is among the nations exempt from these duties for products such as orphan drugs, cell therapies, and gene therapies.

In domestic news, Union Minister Piyush Goyal noted that Uttar Pradesh is emerging as a major investment hub, with annual exports projected to grow from Rs 2 lakh crore to Rs 5 lakh crore by 2030.
