India approves 40,000 crore rupee project for eight stealth warships

The Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a project worth over 40,000 crore rupees to construct eight next-generation corvettes for the Indian Navy. The initiative is part of a broader fleet expansion plan aimed at increasing the navy to more than 200 ships by 2035.

Two state-owned shipyards will undertake the construction. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata is expected to build five vessels, while Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) will build the remaining three. Contracts are expected to be signed in the coming days.

The new warships will feature an indigenous stealth design developed by the Indian Navy, with a target of more than 70 percent indigenous content. Each vessel is expected to have a displacement of approximately 2,000 tonnes and reach speeds of about 30 knots. These multi-role combatants are designed for anti-submarine, anti-surface, and anti-air warfare, as well as surveillance, escort, and coastal defense missions.

The first warship is targeted for delivery by 2030, with efforts underway to potentially accelerate the construction timeline.
