India expands renewable energy capacity by 24.56 GW in H1 FY 2026-27
India added 24.56 GW of renewable energy capacity during the first half of the 2026-27 financial year. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, solar power accounted for approximately 85 percent of these additions, totaling 20,790.76 MW. This brings India’s cumulative solar capacity to 171.05 GW, with ground-mounted plants making up the largest share at 125.65 GW.
Other additions during this period included 3,106.23 MW of wind capacity, 650 MW from large hydro, and 10.40 MW from small hydro.
Looking ahead, the wind energy sector is projected to see significant growth, with annual capacity additions expected to reach 8 GW in FY2026-27 and 13.2 GW by FY2030-31. India currently has 59.2 GW of installed wind capacity, with an additional 43 GW of projects under construction. This expansion is supported by the proposed ₹1.86 lakh crore Green Energy Corridor Phase-III initiative, which aims to strengthen transmission infrastructure as part of India’s goal to reach 900 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2035.
