India expands space launch capacity with third pad and booming private sector

India has launched 12 orbital missions between July 2023 and June 2026, deploying 11 domestic satellites and 9 for international customers. To meet rising demand, the government approved construction of a third launch platform at Sriharikota, complementing the existing two pads and supporting next‑generation launch vehicles.

Reforms now allow private firms to set up temporary facilities within ISRO sites and use critical infrastructure, cutting development costs and timelines. Private‑sector investment in the space industry rose to about US$618.5 million by March 2026, a nearly six‑fold increase from the US$100.5 million recorded in 2021‑22. The ecosystem has grown from a single active startup in 2014 to more than 400 companies, which have placed over 30 satellites and flown roughly 45 payloads on missions such as the Orbital Experimental Module.

These measures aim to create a competitive commercial space environment and strengthen India’s position in the global aerospace market.
