India expands vocational training through local initiatives and global standard alignment

India is advancing its vocational training landscape through both localized corporate initiatives and international standardization efforts.

In the Kalahandi region, Vedanta Aluminium has implemented a Skill Development Initiative that has trained over 1,000 youths. The program, which includes courses such as Assistant Electrician and Food & Beverage Associate, has seen a 55% female participation rate, with more than 75% of trainees securing employment within Odisha. The initiative operates through partnerships with government agencies like OSDA and NABARD.

On a national scale, the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is working to harmonize Indian vocational standards with those of Germany, Japan, and Israel. According to NSDC CEO Arun Kumar Pillai, this alignment aims to enhance the global employability and mobility of Indian professionals by integrating international skill benchmarks into domestic training frameworks. This effort is supported by increasing domestic interest in skilled trades, evidenced by approximately 3.6 lakh registrations for the WorldSkills selection process in India.
