India explores participation in France's Future Combat Air System

India has formally begun exploring participation in the French-led Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, according to disclosures from its Ministry of Defence to a parliamentary standing committee. The move comes as India seeks a path to next-generation airpower to address a 13-squadron shortfall in the Indian Air Force and the rapid modernization of China’s air capabilities.

For France, the partnership offers a potential financial and industrial partner to sustain its sixth-generation fighter ambitions, particularly following the collapse of a joint Franco-German fighter effort in June 2026 due to disputes between Dassault Aviation and Airbus. While France maintains sovereign design capabilities, fiscal constraints may create opportunities for Indian capital and manufacturing scale.

Bilateral discussions are expected to focus on co-development, technology transfer, and domestic production rights for propulsion, radar, and networked “combat cloud” architectures. India is pursuing this interest alongside its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program. No formal financial commitments or workshare agreements have been signed at this stage.
