India Extends Tenure of Cabinet Secretary Somanathan and Home Secretary Mohan

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved one‑year extensions for two senior Indian bureaucrats. Cabinet Secretary T. V. Somanathan, a 1987‑batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, will remain in post until 30 August 2027, extending his tenure beyond the original end date of 30 August 2026. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, a 1989‑batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre, received an extension until 22 August 2027, a year beyond his previous term.

Both extensions were granted by relaxing provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death‑cum‑Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. Somanathan, who took office as Cabinet Secretary on 30 August 2024, has previously served as Finance Secretary and held senior roles in the Prime Minister’s Office and the World Bank. Mohan, appointed Home Secretary in August 2024, previously headed the Ministry of Culture and held senior positions in the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
