India faces challenges in infrastructure quality and institutional trust

India is experiencing a divergence between its growing capacity to deliver physical infrastructure and the strength of its institutional trust. While the state has made significant strides in building expressways, implementing digital payments, and facilitating direct benefit transfers, concerns remain regarding the ability of institutions to provide fair scrutiny and administrative transparency.

In the infrastructure sector, specifically regarding National Highway 53 in the Jalgaon district, issues with construction quality have emerged. Reports indicate that despite large investments in four-laning projects, certain sections such as the Phagane-Tarsoad stretch have faced criticism. Specifically, a railway overpass near Asoda collapsed due to heavy rainfall and remained unrepaired for three months, raising questions about the quality of work performed by contractors and the oversight of the National Highways Authority of India.
