India faces learning crisis despite high school enrollment
India faces a significant gap between its high-achieving diaspora and its domestic education outcomes. While the country has achieved a 98.1 percent enrollment rate for children aged six to fourteen, data suggests a crisis in actual learning quality.
According to the 2024 Annual Status of Education Report, which surveyed nearly 650,000 children across more than 600 rural districts, only 23.4 percent of Standard III students met basic benchmarks. Despite managing a massive network of 1.47 million institutions serving approximately 247 million students, the system struggles to translate high enrollment into effective human capital development.
