India coal supply remains stable despite rising power demand

Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy has clarified that India is not facing a coal shortage, despite a 12% to 15% increase in thermal power demand. He noted that while monsoon conditions caused temporary disruptions to mining operations and reduced hydropower generation, the supply via road and rail remains sufficient and the situation is normal.

Speaking at the Assocham-organized Angul Aluminium Roadshow, Reddy addressed concerns regarding power plant supplies, stating that temporary disruptions should not be mistaken for a systemic shortage. He also highlighted the government's intent to collaborate with West Bengal to strengthen its mining sector and improve transparency, following years of industry challenges.

In related developments, Coal India Limited is undergoing strategic modernization of its underground and open-cast operations. The company is integrating advanced digital technologies, including AI, IoT, and data analytics, to improve recovery rates, enhance safety, and implement features such as 'smart mines' and automated dispatch.
