India faces record electricity shortage amid renewable energy growth
India is experiencing a significant rise in electricity shortages, with the monthly deficit reaching 544 million units (MU) in September, the highest recorded so far this year. This increase follows an August deficit of 98 MU. Data from Grid-India and the Central Electricity Authority indicate that electricity demand is consistently exceeding official projections due to rising urban consumption, economic activity, and cooling needs.
Despite these supply challenges, India has reached a milestone in renewable energy integration. During the summer, over half of the country’s peak electricity demand was met through a combination of solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear sources. Renewable energy capacity has grown to 300 gigawatts, representing 54 percent of the total capacity, a substantial increase from 4 gigawatts a decade ago. However, the rapid growth in generation has outpaced electrical power capacity, creating challenges for grid management.
