India farmers and workers hold nationwide ‘Jail Bharo’ protests

Farmers, workers, and various affiliated organizations conducted a nationwide ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ protest against the Indian central government's policies. The demonstrations targeted free trade agreements, labour reforms, and measures perceived as favoring corporate interests over agricultural and worker welfare.

In Himachal Pradesh, protesters assembled in Shimla and approximately 25 other locations, including Rampur and Una. Organizers expressed concerns that current trade negotiations and US tariff policies could devastate the local apple economy. Farmer leader Sohan Tanwar criticized the government's approach to US trade and oil imports, describing the policies as “anti-farmer and anti-worker.”

In Tripura, the agitation saw significant participation from women, agricultural laborers, and Anganwadi workers. Organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and central trade unions, the protests spanned 21 locations across eight districts. Police reported detaining more than 12,000 protesters during the demonstrations, though no major incidents were reported. Leaders from the CPI(M) led the rallies, demanding better crop prices and addressing shortages in fertilizers, seeds, and irrigation facilities.
