India economy reports record FDI and 7.8% growth

India's economic landscape shows significant milestones and emerging challenges. Marking the 12th anniversary of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal reported that annual Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) reached a record USD 94.53 billion in fiscal year 2025-26, with cumulative inflows since 2014 totaling USD 843 billion. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have contributed Rs 2.40 lakh crore in investment and generated over 14.6 lakh jobs.

In the April-June 2026-27 quarter, FDI rose 6 per cent to $19.81 billion, with Japan emerging as the largest investor at $5.71 billion. However, inflows from the US saw a sharp decline of over 76 per cent. The Indian economy recorded a robust GDP growth rate of 7.8 per cent in Q1 2026-27, though the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cautioned that geopolitical tensions and weather-related uncertainties remain downside risks.

Other sectors also showed activity: domestic tourist visits reached 428.55 crore in 2025, with forex earnings exceeding Rs 2.76 lakh crore. Additionally, the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has processed over 470 crore orders.
