India festive buying intent shows divergent trends across major cities
Data from TRA Research’s Buying Intent Index (BII) indicates significant variations in festive consumer readiness across major Indian cities for the 2026 season. Comparing the June-August period of 2026 to 2025, the report shows uneven growth across different product categories and urban belts.
Mumbai has demonstrated strong momentum in several sectors. Electrical goods and lighting both saw substantial increases, with lighting rising 42.5 points. Other notable gains in Mumbai include air conditioners, food and beverages, hypermarkets, and consumer electronics. Specific city belts in Mumbai also showed localized surges, such as a 40.4% increase in passenger vehicles in the Eastern Suburbs.
In Delhi NCR, the strongest citywide improvements were observed in digital services, apparel, and cosmetics. For instance, apparel intent rose by 17.3 points. Regional data shows concentrated growth in areas like South Delhi for air conditioners and Gurgaon for food and beverages. Other cities included in the study are Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, and Lucknow, reflecting a diverse landscape of consumer interest ranging from mobility and technology to beauty and everyday consumption.
