India food labeling dispute reaches Supreme Court

Health activists in India have filed a formal challenge in the Supreme Court against a government proposal for front-of-pack food warning labels. The nonprofit group 3S And Our Health argues that the current framework contains an “industry-friendly loophole” that could allow many unhealthy products to avoid scrutiny.

The government’s proposal requires a red hexagonal warning label only if a product exceeds prescribed limits for at least two of three specific nutrients: added sugar, salt, or saturated fat. Activists contend that each nutrient should independently trigger a warning, noting that “a product that is high in sugar alone remains a diabetes risk.”

The Indian government has defended the plan, stating that the implementation will occur in phases. While a second phase could introduce warnings for individual nutrients, no specific timeline has been established. The outcome of this legal challenge could significantly impact India’s $100 billion packaged food and beverage industry by influencing consumer behavior and manufacturing standards.
