India forecasts 7.3% economic growth for fiscal year 2026-2027

The Indian Ministry of Finance has projected that the nation's economy will grow by 7.3% during the 2026-2027 fiscal year, ending in March 2027. This forecast is higher than the 7.1% growth rate previously estimated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Despite the positive outlook, the Ministry warned of several risks, including inflation, energy price volatility, and global economic instability. Short-term inflation may be influenced by domestic food supply management, global energy costs, and market liquidity. Additionally, the El Niño phenomenon poses a threat to agricultural production by potentially reducing soil moisture before the winter sowing season.

The Ministry also noted that rising oil prices, capital outflows, and international tensions continue to pressure the rupee. However, India maintains a strong external financial buffer, with foreign exchange reserves reaching $721 billion as of October 16, which is sufficient to cover 10.3 months of imports. Recent measures by the RBI to provide USD to state-owned oil and gas companies and limit currency speculation are expected to help stabilize exchange rates.
