Indian stock markets crash amid rising oil prices and US-Iran tensions

Indian equity markets experienced a significant crash on Monday, with both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 indices falling sharply. The Sensex dropped by over 1,100 points to close at 72,771.72, while the Nifty 50 fell below the 23,000 mark, settling at 22,780.25. This downturn resulted in an estimated loss of over 8 lakh crore rupees in investor wealth.

The sell-off was driven by several global and domestic factors, most notably surging crude oil prices, which saw Brent crude climb above $107 per barrel. Geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran also played a major role, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s rejection of an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Additional pressures included rising U.S. 10-year bond yields, a weakening rupee, and continuous selling by foreign institutional investors. The decline was broad-based across sectors, with significant losses recorded in banking, realty, energy, and metal stocks.
