India Gate protests: Parents of Ankita Bhandari and Congress leaders detained

Delhi Police detained several protesters, including Congress leader Pawan Khera and the parents of Ankita Bhandari, during an overnight demonstration at India Gate. The police action occurred around 4:00 AM. While the parents of Ankita Bhandari were released shortly after their detention, other opposition leaders and protesters remained in custody.

The protest was organized to demand justice in the September 2022 murder case of Ankita Bhandari, a resort worker in Uttarakhand. Specifically, the protesters are demanding the cancellation of the appointment of BJP leader Dushyant Kumar Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim. The Bhandari family is calling for a halt to the appointment until a thorough investigation into a potential ‘VIP angle’ in the murder case is completed.

The Congress party has condemned the police action, accusing authorities of mistreating protesters and targeting those seeking justice for the victim.
