India's GDP grows 7.8% in Q1 FY27, exceeding RBI estimates
India's economy grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of FY27 (April-June 2026), according to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). This growth rate exceeded the 7% estimate previously projected by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Real GDP for the quarter was estimated at Rs 81.36 lakh crore, while nominal GDP grew by 10.3% to reach Rs 88.27 lakh crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the performance as a result of the nation's collective strength and determination, especially amidst global geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. He urged citizens to support the 'Vocal for Local' initiative, prioritize domestic products, and reduce non-essential foreign travel and gold purchases to bolster self-reliance.
The growth figures have sparked debate regarding methodology. Union Minister Piyush Goyal and former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant defended the data, stating that critics are incorrectly comparing the new 2022-23 series with the old 2011-12 series. Conversely, some former officials and opposition leaders have questioned the accuracy of the figures due to base year revisions.
