India-Germany submarine deal awaits final Indian approval

The proposed India-Germany submarine deal under Project 75(I) has been finalized on the German side, according to German Ambassador to India Dr. Jasper Wieck. The agreement now awaits the completion of internal approval processes within India.

The program involves a partnership between Indian shipbuilder Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and German defense firm TKMS to construct six next-generation conventional submarines in India. The deal, estimated to exceed ₹90,000 crore, aims to include substantial technology transfer to bolster India's domestic manufacturing capabilities. A technical review of the proposed technology-transfer package is among the remaining steps before final approval.

Ambassador Wieck noted that this agreement reflects a shift in bilateral relations toward deeper industrial cooperation, supported by the Defence Industrial Roadmap signed in April. He also highlighted broader maritime cooperation, including German participation in Indian military exercises and the deployment of a German liaison officer at the Indo-Pacific Information Fusion Centre in Delhi.
