India government develops roadmap for CBSE three-language policy

The Indian government informed the Supreme Court that it is developing an implementation roadmap for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) three-language policy. The mandate requires Class 9 students to study three languages, including at least two native Indian languages.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told the court that the Centre is working on suggestions regarding teacher availability, textbooks, and language choices to ensure a smooth rollout. The policy aims to align the CBSE scheme of studies with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, has expressed concern that the policy should not place undue pressure on students. The court previously noted that while promoting Indian languages is laudable, the implementation must be streamlined to avoid impediments, such as inadequate human resource infrastructure. The matter has been deferred by one week.
