India provides $840,000 climate risk aid to Tanzania
India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations announced a grant of $840,000 to Tanzania to finance a programme that protects vulnerable communities from climate‑related hazards. The money will be transferred through the India‑UN Development Fund, a fund created in 2017 with $150 million in partnership with the UN to support development assistance for Global South countries.
The grant is covered by the Fund’s Commonwealth Window, which allocates resources to fellow Commonwealth members. Tanzania’s Disaster Management Department, operating under the Prime Minister’s Office, will lead the project, which is designed to back the country’s National Disaster Risk Financing Framework and Implementation Plan 2031 (NDRFFIP). Over a five‑year period the initiative will strengthen financial preparedness and climate resilience for women, people with disabilities and low‑income groups. The programme is formally titled “Enhancing Financial Resilience Through the Climate Insurance and Resilience Programme (CIRP)” and is being implemented in partnership with the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
