India healthcare sector faces scrutiny over single-use medical device reuse

Hospital chains and healthcare associations in India have requested the central government to reconsider restrictions on reusing medical devices labeled for single use. Proponents of the change cite concerns regarding service continuity and the affordability of treatments.

However, manufacturers have raised safety objections, and the government has expressed concerns regarding both the risks of reuse and potential billing inaccuracies. Public health experts in Karnataka have warned that the directive against reusing single-use devices requires rigorous enforcement to protect patient safety. Experts suggest that current monitoring may be undermined by inadequate staffing, limited inspections, and weak enforcement mechanisms within the private healthcare sector.

To ensure compliance, advocates are calling for dedicated regulatory personnel, routine medical audits, and stronger oversight structures. There are concerns that without specialized officers and a dedicated regulatory framework, it will be difficult to monitor smaller hospitals, clinics, and laboratories.
