India Hospitals Hold Breastfeeding Walkathons for World Breastfeeding Week

KIMS Cuddles hospital in Kondapur, Hyderabad, launched a week‑long World Breastfeeding Week campaign that included a walkathon featuring obstetricians, neonatologists, paediatricians, nurses, lactation consultants and expectant mothers. The event emphasized that successful breastfeeding requires support from families, healthcare providers and society, and was accompanied by educational sessions, live demonstrations and myth‑busting activities. Dr. Aparna C., Regional Director of Neonatology at KIMS Cuddles, highlighted the nutritional and immunological benefits of breast milk and the need for practical guidance for mothers.

Rela Hospital in Chrompet, Chennai, organized a three‑kilometre walkathon with more than 200 doctors, nurses and members of the public. The walk was flagged off by Dr. Naresh Shanmugam, Director of Women and Child Health, who reiterated the World Health Organization’s call for stronger community and governmental support for breastfeeding. The hospital cited national survey data showing that only about 64% of infants under six months are exclusively breastfed, underscoring the need for continued awareness efforts.
