India implements stricter food security eligibility and e-KYC requirements

Authorities in India are implementing stricter measures to ensure the National Food Security Act (NFSA) benefits reach eligible citizens. In Akola, the Food Supply Department identified 15,576 ineligible beneficiaries whose grain distribution was ordered to cease as of October 1, 2026. These individuals were found to exceed income limits—set at ₹59,000 annually for urban areas and ₹44,000 for rural areas—or were identified as government, railway, or postal employees, and owners of four-wheeled vehicles.

The identification process utilized data from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) through Aadhaar linking. District Supply Officer Ravindra Ennawar stated that the campaign to identify ineligible recipients will continue to increase transparency in the distribution system.

In Kheroda, local officials held a Gram Sabha to educate villagers on maintaining their eligibility. Emphasis was placed on the necessity of completing Aadhaar e-KYC and LPG gas mapping to prevent disruptions in ration distribution and subsidies. Officials warned that failure to submit required documentation to fair price shops could result in a loss of benefits.
