India imposes new anti-dumping duties on Bangladeshi jute products
India has implemented new anti-dumping duties on various jute products imported from Bangladesh, including jute yarn, twine, hessian cloth, sacking bags, and sacking cloth. The decision follows a mid-term review by India’s Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), which claimed that low-priced imports from Bangladesh were harming India’s domestic jute industry.
The new tariff structure is highly specific to individual manufacturers. A list of approximately 36 to 55 Bangladeshi companies has been designated with varying duty rates. For instance, six companies—including AM Jute Industries Limited, Bonanza Jute Composite, Lovely Jute Mills, Nauhatta Jute Mills, Poddar Agro Industries, and Ranu Agro Industries—have secured duty-free status for all types of jute products. Other firms, such as Asha Jute Industries Limited, face duties ranging from $59 to $94 per tonne on specific items.
Companies not included in the official list face significantly higher penalties. For these unlisted entities, the duty on jute yarn or twine can reach as high as $445 per tonne, while hessian cloth and sacking bags face duties of $88 and $283 per tonne, respectively. To qualify for the lower rates assigned to listed manufacturers, exporters must provide valid commercial invoices explicitly declaring that the goods were produced by the listed entity.
