India Income Tax Department Confirms No Extension for AY 2026-27 Filing Deadline

The Income Tax Department has confirmed that the filing deadline for Assessment Year (AY) 2026‑27 will not be further extended. Most individual taxpayers must submit returns by 31 July, while certain non‑audit entities such as professionals and partners in un‑audited firms have been given an extended deadline of 31 August. All ITR‑1 to ITR‑4 forms and filing utilities were released in June, reducing the likelihood of technical glitches that previously prompted extensions.

Separately, the department highlighted that 30 June 2026 is the legal cut‑off for serving Section 143(2) scrutiny notices on returns filed for FY 2025‑26. Notices served after this date may be challenged. The scrutiny process follows a risk‑based approach covering survey, search, reassessment and recurring addition cases as outlined by the CBDT.
