India Income Tax Return Deadline Triggers Scam Warnings
The deadline for filing income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026‑27 in India is July 31, 2026. Taxpayers who miss this date may face penalties of Rs 5,000 for incomes above Rs 5 lakh or Rs 1,000 for lower incomes, as well as interest and loss of certain tax benefits. Late returns can be filed up to December 31, 2026, but the deadline is considered final.
In the days leading up to the deadline, scammers have intensified phishing attacks that mimic official communications from the Income Tax Department. Authentic emails originate only from the @incometax.gov.in domain; any variation or use of .com/.in domains is fraudulent. A cybersecurity firm, Shreshta IT Technologies, identified a bilingual Hindi‑English phishing campaign linked to actors in China, distributing malware‑laden “office memorandum” attachments that claim tax irregularities and demand documents within 72 hours. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has repeatedly warned the public that such emails are fake and advise taxpayers not to click any links or share personal information.
